Films, People and Parties to Look For at This Year’s TIFF

by Author

The Toronto International Film Festival, which kicked off September 10, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Much like a good scotch, TIFF only gets better with age, and this is quite possibly its finest year yet.

With 289 features and 110 shorts being screened, film buffs will have the opportunity to see some of the very best movie from Canada and around the world. Many of these films will be debuting at TIFF. From the star-studded red carpets to the private parties, TIFF is one of Hammond International Properties’ favourite Toronto events.

Must-See Films

New York investment banker (Jake Gyllenhaal) engages in random acts of destruction after losing his wife in a car crash. Quebec filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée landed TIFF’s coveted opening gala slot with this film.

Black Mass

Johnny Depp stars as notorious Irish-American gangster Whitey Bulger, who spent thirty years as an FBI informant while rising to the top of the Boston underworld.  Director Scott Cooper’s thrilling recreation of Bulger’s life has everything you love about gangster movies.

The Martian

Stranded on Mars, a NASA astronaut (played by Matt Damon) struggles to survive on the arid planet while his ground crew races to mount a rescue mission. This epic interplanetary movie comes from director Ridley Scott.

TIFF has a knack for attracting the biggest celebrities, and you’re guaranteed to see at least one famous face if you’re anywhere near the festival. This year, Natalie Portman, Idris Elba, Bryan Cranston, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore and Johnny Depp were all spotted at the festival.

The After Party

Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film

Jewelry retailer Birks is hosting its 4th annual Women in Film bash at the Shangri-La Hotel. This year’s honourees include Catherine O'Hara, Sophie Deraspe and Ingrid Veninger. This private event takes place September 15.

Tribute dinner for Jeremy Irons

On September 16, the Four Seasons hotel will be throwing an invite only dinner party for Jeremy Irons and The Man Who Knew Infinity costar Dev Patel.

The Final Girls Party

The Trump Hotel is hosting an invite only party on September 18. Taissa Farmiga, Nina Dobrev and Malin Ackerman will all be at The Final Girls post-celebration bash.

TIFF runs until September 20, so there’s still time to get in on the action.
